1/30/2018 0 Comments Math Stories & Missing AddendsToday, students were launched into learning with this question. Before I revealed the numbers, I asked students to think about the story. "What is the story about?" Students made a movie in their mind. Students also saw me act out the story, using blocks. Finally, we talked about the question. "What are we trying to find out?" The numbers were revealed and we read the problem together. Students went off to work. These are three different strategies I saw. The first with tiles is called "direct modeling." Here, this student used tiles, then wrote down how they thought about what happened with the tiles. "There are 10. If four are left, then 6 were eaten." The second student used a "counting" strategy. "10, 9, 8, 7, 6." The last student used "known facts." When asked how many crackers were eaten, this student said, "6, because 10 - 4 = 6." Question 4 was more challenging. Some students took the numbers and added them together because the word "more" made them think they should add. You can see this in the first example. In the next example, this student decided to use a "counting" strategy. "6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15." The last example is using "derived facts." This student knew that 5 + 10 = 15, so then 6 + 9 must be the same as 15 too.

1/30/2018 0 Comments The best...Students have been thinking about their own opinions. Today, we talked about how it's okay to disagree with people about our favorite things. "Don't be surprised to find someone disagrees with you." Students were given sentence stems to help them express how they either agree, respectfully disagree, and why. Then, students were given time to write their ideas.
First Place: The Superhero Thomas Train "This is special to me because my grandmother got it for me. I also like the color of it. I can also play superhero with it. The end." First Place: The Labyrinth Pin "It looks beautiful because it has the clover. I think my mom will love it like a gift and I think my mom will love it because it's shiny so she can see herself. I think my mom will like the clover too!" First Place: The Glitter Ball "It is my favorite because I like it. I like to play with it. I go to sleep with it. It is special because I got it from my mom." 1/24/2018 0 Comments Lego Staircase Building ContestStudents earned a Lego Party this week for showing ROCKS! These students decided to enter a Lego contest by building staircases. We considered who had the strongest staircase, tallest, and most unique. We also talked about challenges and how we faced them. We are always thinking about ways to face challenges and grow our brains!
1/24/2018 0 Comments Alfalfa and Rye to the Max!Students made observations of the alfalfa and rye growth. After this, we gave our grass a cut. Next week, we'll look to see if the grass grows back!
1/24/2018 0 Comments Multiple AddendsAs you can see, students are using different strategies to explore these problems with multiple addends. One student combined the first two numbers with known facts and added the rest on, using the number line. 6 + 3 = 9, so 9 + 4 = 13, because 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.
Some students made groups of tiles to help them count and showed their thinking with a picture of how they grouped the tiles. In one example, a student put numbers in the squares to show how she counted them. One student used the hundreds chart. She counted "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4." She realized that she landed on number 13 and knew the answer must be 13. Some students used a tally strategy. In the first question, this student grouped the tally marks by the numbers in the problem, 6, 3, and 4. In the second question. This student realized that 7, 5, and 3 could be shown with sets of five. 7 + 3 is 10 and 10 + 5 is 15. That's 3 groups of 5. 1/17/2018 0 Comments MLK Books and ReflectionsStudents shared their dreams.
"I dream that people can have the jobs they want." "I dream that homeless people will have homes." "I dream that people will have enough money." "I dream that everyone will share, even if MLK is not here." 1/17/2018 0 Comments Brassica Seed Pods and MeasurementWe noticed that our Brassica plants grew seed pods after we pollinated them! We also practiced measuring our plants to see how tall they grew. Notice anything strange about the last picture?
1/17/2018 0 Comments Singular and PluralToday, it was my goal to help students sort words, not simply based on whether or not they included an "es" on the end, but by knowing that some nouns were singular - meaning "one" - and some were plural - meaning "more than one."
1/17/2018 0 Comments Vocabulary GrowthWow! Look at all these vocabulary words your student has been hearing and practicing in the classroom! These books are displayed to help remind students of the words in these books. The class favorite is "Diary of a Wombat." As we read these books we think about what these words must mean based on their context. We think of synonyms and opposites to help us understand the words even more.
1/17/2018 0 Comments Strategies with DominoesStudents used different strategies to count the dots on their dominoes. Some of the most efficient ways to count included; using math facts such as "I know it's six because four plus two is six," adding on such as "four, five, six. There are six," or knowing doubles, "I know five plus five is ten, so five plus six must be eleven." Students were encouraged to ask each other, "how many did you count? How did you see it?" Students were also encouraged to either agree or respectfully disagree, using reasons to share. This gave students the opportunity to revise thinking and grow as mathematicians!
