10/31/2017 0 Comments Snap Words Come AliveTo learn snap words, we first read them in context. Then, we read the individual words out loud. We spell them. We write them. We MEMORIZE them so we can read them in a snap. Keep up the good work!

10/31/2017 0 Comments The Double Decker BusUp until report cards, our math unit will be focused on The Double Decker Bus. We will be using the rekenrek to notice 5 and 10 structures within 20. We will rearrange and decompose numbers, count groups of numbers, add and subtract. Feel free to watch this four minute introductory video with your student to learn more.
Double Decker Bus 10/24/2017 0 Comments Math - It Sure Has Changed!I just had a conversation with a parent on the phone today and remembered something - yes! Math sure has changed since we were in school! Instead of memorizing facts, we are expecting first graders to reason how they would solve a problem. Take this picture for example. This is what your student probably sees 2 or 3 times a week. Your student hears the story, reads the story, and tries to picture the story. "What is this story about?" Once we have the story established, then we can think about the question and fill the numbers in. Knowing math facts is helpful, but being able to explain how you know 2 + 2 = 3 + 1 is just as important!
As we get closer to report cards, here are some things you may want to work with your student on at home: Counting and writing numbers between 50 and 120 Counting collections and writing down thinking with pictures and numbers Addition and subtraction word problems within 20 Addition and subtraction equations 10/24/2017 0 Comments Celebrations! Our students have written many stories, but for the last week of our "Small Moments" study, students chose their favorite works, revised, and published their stories. You can view their work outside the classroom on the wall. I will also have these available to see during conferences. Also, students will be receiving their official Word Detective Badges tomorrow from the "secret word detective agency!"
10/24/2017 0 Comments Integrating DiscoverU Week!Students have the opportunity this week to be thinking about the future - what they would like to be when they grow up and how they will make their dreams come true! To strengthen our reading and writing, we are reading these books in clubs of 3 to 4 students. (Firefighter, Nurse, Police Officer, Doctor, Teacher, and Veterinarian.) Clubs choose reading strategies that benefit all members such as echo, choral, or see-saw reading. Integrating this with our new writing unit, students are starting to write fact books. Many students have chosen to write a fact book based on their research of these topics.
How to write a fact book: 1. Think of at least five facts for one subject and use your fingers to count them 2. Sketch your ideas across five or more pages 3. Write your ideas across five or more pages 10/18/2017 0 Comments Word FamiliesStudents have been experimenting with writing words by changing the first sounds. This week, students have had the opportunity to practice substituting the first letter in "mat" for h to make "hat." Today, we have looked at adding letters to in and it to make new words. Later, we noticed patterns in words that sound the same such as "surprise," "wise," and "rise." Some students noticed that silent e on the end that makes the i say it's own name.
10/18/2017 0 Comments True or FalseStudents are learning that the equals sign means "the same as." One side of the equals sign must be equal to the other side. Some students are realizing that we may not have to count both sides to know if the equation is true or false. For instance, 1 +5 = 5 + 1. We can see that the equation is true without counting the numbers because we can identify that the 1 & 5 are on both sides of the equation in a different order. In addition, some students may realize that the order does not matter when adding numbers.
10/13/2017 0 Comments Writing like our favorite authorsThis week, we tried to emulate our favorite authors by using some of the same literary devices. For instance, some students tried using ellipses...to create excitement. Mo Willems does this in Elephant and Piggie books. Some students decided to try describing character actions like "My Mouth is a Volcano" does. Finally, some students made their words bold to remind the reader to read with a big voice, just like the author does with "Clark the Shark."
