9/26/2018 0 Comments Days of the WeekWriters used various tools to help them write this book about the days of the week. Students used the calendar, word wall, and the Days of the Week song to help them write the days of the week in a specific order. Then, students used all they knew to write what they ate on those days. Writers started with first letter sounds. (P is for pizza). Students might expand to thinking about middle and ending sounds. (Pesu for pizza) Writers used their alpha link charts to help them as well. Some students may have copied words from print around the classroom, but I am encouraging all students to think about the sounds in words and do their best to write what they know.

9/26/2018 0 Comments The Cupcake ProblemToday, the goal was to practice some mathematical skills such as noticing, wondering (asking questions), sharing what we think, listening and repeating ideas from others, choosing tools, recording thinking on paper, and proving ideas with evidence.
The summary today focused on how students matched their recordings to the cupcake problem. "It has three cupcakes. They have four candles, three candles, and two candles." "Three candles were still burning. Six candles were blown out." We highlighted different ways to work the problem; with fingers, blocks, pictures, and other tools. Then, we went back to try a different way of solving the problem. Mathematicians try different ways to solve problems! Mathematicians record their ideas and match the story! 9/14/2018 0 Comments TangramsWe listened to the book “Grandpa Tang” and challenged ourselves to build the same tangrams from the story. We practiced saying, “This is hard, but I’m going to keep trying.” Or “I don’t get this yet, but this challenge is growing my brain.” Mathematicians persevere and don’t give up! We also compared our models to the picture in the book. How is it the same? How is it different? Mathematicians also revise their thinking!
9/14/2018 0 Comments Attributes of TrianglesMathematicians are learning how to define the attributes of 2D shapes like triangles. They must be closed with three straight lines and three corners (vertices).
9/11/2018 0 Comments Making Shapes with Pattern BlocksMathematicians use shapes to build other shapes. Students are challenged to create shapes in multiple ways. During this explore time, students are prompted to identify shapes by their names and attributes. Students also track the number of each kind of shape to make the larger shape.
9/10/2018 0 Comments Working as a Team! Here, mathematicians are working as a team to create shapes, using yarn. Students are asked to follow two rules.
1. All students must hold onto the yarn 2. Students must work together to make a shape Students produced shapes such as triangles, squares (which are special type of rectangle), other rectangles, hexagons, and trapezoids. We talked about listening to our group members and asking members to share their thinking. "What do you think?" 9/10/2018 0 Comments Partner ReadingWow! Look at these awesome partners! Students know the best way to partner read; sitting next to each other, eyes on the book, and book in the middle! Students can take turns reading "see-saw" or can do echo read (repeat after me). Partners talk about how they will read the book and they even try something at the end of their book such as finding their favorite part!
