8/30/2018 0 Comments Calm Down CenterToday, students are learning how to use the calm-down center.
When to use the center: When I'm feeling so upset, I can't work. When I'm so angry, my heart is racing and my muscles tense up When I'm so sad, I want to cry How to use the center: 1. Start the 5 minute timer 2. Start noticing my feelings. Use the Wheel of Awareness. I may be feeling many feelings at once. I can start with the "me" circle, go out to notice a feeling, and come back to the "me" circle. I can go out again to notice a different feeling and repeat. 3. I can write feelings on the mood meter or raise my hand for Mrs. T to come talk with me. 4. I can decide how I want to respond. I can choose which exercises I want to try to calm down. Close my eyes Take deep breaths Count Rub hands, jaw, legs Robot (tense muscles), Rag doll (relax muscles) Self talk "It's okay..." "I can..." "I am calm..." 5. Notice myself calm down and move my name to where I feel now. I am ready to get back to work.

8/30/2018 0 Comments First Week of School 2018WOW! You're students are learning so much this week! They are also showing me what they already know. Notice the Safety Rules and Lab Expectations. Your student was a part of brainstorming and practicing these expectations this week. We also practiced routines for the literacy block and math. We use a timer in our class for all activities including clean up. Students are practicing how to get to clean up and get to the carpet quickly, quietly, and safely within 1 minute. Students will look to the timer to know how much time they have to keep working. Students are practicing hand signs to communicate. Your student should know how to show a sign for bathroom, drink, tissue, to talk, to agree, and to differ. Students are learning all about emotions so they can take more steps towards self-regulation and problem-solving. We know how to identify feelings with the mood meter. Your student can move their name to a spot on the mood meter to notice how they feel and think about it. Students have learned about the "calm-down center" where they can take breaks. Students can use this center to help them self-regulate and get back to work. We are keeping track of school days with coins. So far, we have two pennies for two school days. If you would like to see your student's face or student work in the blog, you need to sign a photo permission form (found in your student's blue folder) and return it to school. Otherwise, you can download it here. Thank you!
