12/17/2017 0 Comments The Brassica is Flowering! Our Brassica is flowering. Sadly, we may miss the pollination cycle of our brassica plants. However, we will get a chance to see more plants grow in January. Look forward to carrots, potatoes, onions, and more!

12/17/2017 0 Comments The Gingerbread BoyFor the last day of school, our class looked for the Gingerbread Boy around the school. He left us clues until we found Gingerbread cookies! We read the Gingerbread Boy book together and celebrated the end of the day with coloring our own Gingerbread boys. Happy Holidays!
12/11/2017 0 Comments PE VocabularyStudents are not only learning how to stretch in PE! They are also learning about muscle names. Ask your student, "what are you stretching in this picture?"
12/11/2017 0 Comments Using Graphic OrganizersAs a class, we came up with a new topic for a chapter book. We thought about big chapter ideas and small details to support those chapters. As students shared ideas, we wrote them down in our graphic organizers. We got through three big ideas for chapters: What dogs need, toys for dogs, and kinds of dogs. During independent work, some students decided to come up with more chapters for their dog books. This student came up with "how to love dogs" and "what makes dogs happy." Some students decided to start writing their first chapter right away. You can see that this student wrote about what dogs need in a list format. "Dogs need water. Dogs need food. Dogs need a house. Dogs need..." Students will be encouraged to use these graphic organizers to help them organize their thoughts before jumping into their books. Well done!
12/11/2017 0 Comments Measuring by Different UnitsStudents have been measuring lines of tape by basketball feet, baby feet, and craft sticks. We thought about accurate ways to measure such as not overlapping, not leaving spaces between, and making sure the units are straight. If students ran out of units because the tape was too long, they improvised! One student decided to make two baby feet "walk" the line and counted how many steps the baby feet took. In the last picture, these students realized that 1 basketball foot was the same as 5 baby feet. They counted, 5, 10, 11, 12, etc. Nice work! In the end, students realized that when measuring by different units, the counts for the same tape would be different.
12/8/2017 0 Comments Comparing Counting CollectionsStudents compared counting collections today for the second time.
1. Plan how you will count and which tools you will use. (Count by 1s? 5s? 10s? Use ten frames? Cups? Bowls?) 2. Count 3. Record thinking (not just the answer, how did you count?) 4. Compare collections. (Which has more and how do you know?) I knew it had more because 109 is more than 66. I knew it because that one had more tens than the other collection. 109 is further down on the counting chart, so it must be more. 66 come before 109 on the number line, so it must be less. If I look at the picture, that one has more bowls than the other one. 12/6/2017 0 Comments Class SortStudents sorted these words together. They took turns putting their words in the columns and explaining their reasoning. Students were also asked to agree or disagree. How do you know it goes in that column?
12/6/2017 0 Comments The TransmogropherStudents were very excited to use the transmographer this morning during phonics. We used our brains to think about how one word could transform into another after going through the machine. When students saw "his" go through and turn into "him," they were asked to think about what changed. Later, students came up with their own words. What happens if we put "play" into the transmographer? Students came up with; stay, say, way, and clay. This can be a fun game to play at home with your student!
12/6/2017 0 Comments Planting BrassicaWe are watching Brassica grow in our classroom. At this point, we have about 10 sprouts coming up and are checking our sprouts everyday for growth. Ask your student how the Brassica is growing!
Students explored many different ways to explore this question:
Ms. T's dog is 3 feet long. Her dinosaur is 10 feet long. How much longer is the dinosaur than the dog? 1. This student drew 10 circles in a line and circled the last 3 circles. Then, the student matched and counted the remaining circles and realized the difference was 7 circles. Then, the student wrote 10 - 3 = 7. 2. This student drew 10 squares in a line and 3 squares in a line. This student wrote numbers in the squares. Then, the student started at square #4 and counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. This student wrote a 7 and circled the answer. 3. This student drew 10 tiles on the paper and colored 7 tiles blue and 3 tiles yellow. Then, the student wrote a seven and pointed an arrow to the 7 blue tiles. 4. This student wrote numbers 1 - 10. Then, this student used a counting down strategy from ten. The student knew to count three from ten. "9, 8, 7." The student showed this by making a number line and drawing bumps between 10, 9, 8, and 7. 5. This student made 10 squares and crossed out 3. The student counted the remaining seven and wrote an answer "it is seven more." |
